The PSAL Girls Freestyle tournament this weekend at Taft High School in the Bronx, featured lady grapplers from Truman, Brooklyn Tech, Murrow, Hunter, MLK, Grover Cleveland, Bronx Science, Sunset Park, and Taft High. This tournament did not have a 125 lb. weight class so there was some adjustments made in the middle weight classes.

In a 3-person round robin style tournament, Brandy Vasquez from Brooklyn Tech went 2-0 to defeating#5 ranked Bolanle Olatunji of Taft who took third and Jroma Parker of Truman who finished second.

A 5-person round-robin wrestle-off featured several head-to-head match-ups of NYC top ranked wrestlers. #1 ranked Aileen Gonzalez of Brooklyn Tech defeated #2 Crystal Siew and #4 Pearl Fletcher to take first place. Siew and Fletcher faced off to determine who would take second behind Gonzalez. Fletcher pulled of the upset and won 15-7. Alana Aga and Kadijah Gentle took fourth and fifth respectively for Murrow.

#3 ranked Shakye Ford of Taft went 4-1 in the 6-person round-robin tournament, dropping one match to Susan Yang of Hunter College who dropped down from 121 lbs. were she was ranked #2 in NYC. Yang won her first tournament at the new weight class. #4 ranked Guadalupe Arellano went 2-3 on the day to take third place.

#1 ranked Andrein Rodriquez of Grover Cleveland defended her top-ranking in impressive fashion by winning 10-0 over #3 Samantha Torres from Taft. Patricia Booth and Natasha Padilla took fourth and fifth respectively for Truman.

This 6-person round-robin bracket featured Francesca DArista of Hunter, ranked #3 at 125 lbs., and Abasiurua Unwanaabasi of Bronx Science, ranked #4. The top three placers in this weight class. Unwanaabasi won the weight class while DArista took third. Anita Grill of Brooklyn Tech took second place and all three top placers finished with a 4-1 record.

This weight class was one of the few double-elimination style brackets of the weekend. #2 (130 lb.) ranked Hao Pan of Grover Cleveland won the tournament, pinning #3 (139 lb.) Stephanie Dorce of Murrow in the semi-finals. Sosara Ma of Bronx Science took second place.

This 3-person round-robin bracket resulted in a three way tie with each wrestler, Nandi Brown (Grover Cleveland), Mickaela Samuel (#3 Brooklyn Tech), Yaneiria Sanchez (Sunset Park), splitting their matches 1-1.

Samantha Fogerty (ranked #2 at 149 lbs.) of Grover Cleveland went 4-0 to take the top spot in this 5-person round-robin bracket. Nayiel Morries of Taft went 3-1, suffering her sole loss to Fogerty, to take second. Morries’ teammate Marly Franco took third place.

#1 ranked Vivian Vu took first place winning all three of her matches. #5 ranked Liza Rodriguez of Murrow finished third behind her teammate Shakima Washington.

Tanyka Massiah defended her #1 ranking in impressive fashion by going 4-0 and pinning her way through the tournament.

#3 ranked Nyasia Jennings of Taft defeated her teammate Nefethyna Palaez and Shanique Reid of Truman to win the three-way round robin bracket. Palaez finished second while Reid took third.
