Beat The Streets wrestlers compete at the 2022 Phil Portuese Northeast Regional Championships

On May 14th 2022, a total of fifteen Beat the Streets NYC wrestlers competed at the 2022 Phil Portuese Northeast Regional championships in Atlantic City, New Jersey. All 15 wrestlers were divided based on weight class and age, competing in the 16U and Junior divisions respectively. This tournament is one of the qualifiers for the 16U and Junior Fargo National championship tournaments.

The most notable wrestler from the 16U division was Christian “underrated” Solano.  Wrestling in the 220lb weight class, Solano recorded 4 victories in 5 matches, on his way to a 2nd place finish at the regionals. Three of his matches were won via tech-fall. As a sophomore in HS, this qualifies Solano for either 16U Nationals, or Junior Nationals, depending on what division he chooses to wrestle at.

In the Junior division, there was also only 1 notable wrestler within the BTS contingent, and that was Davit Abjandadze. In the 220lb weight class, Davit was able to take 8th place, but that unfortunately doesn’t qualify for either division of the national championships at Fargo in July.

Despite the large of the large contingent, only 2 wrestlers were able to place in freestyle, and only 1 of those wrestlers was able to qualify for Fargo. At the time this article is being published, the BTS contingent is wrestling in the Greco-Roman portion of the NE Regionals. No matter the outcome, they will still have one last opportunity to qualify for Fargo, May 20-22 at the Freestyle and Greco-Roman NYS championships. Good luck to the remaining BTS wrestlers vying for a Greco-Roman NE Regional title today, and more importantly a spot on the NYS Fargo team.
